To stop a typical nosebleed, press the side of the nose firmly against the center (the septum) for 3 to 5 minutes.  Most bleeds originate on the septum and will stop when consistent pressure is applied to the site.

(Watch the clock.  Intermittent pressure is ineffective and 3 minutes can seem like an eternity.)
